South Shore CBA Ordinance: Community-Driven Recommendations
Thank you for joining us at the South Shore Housing Forum! At the meeting, we shared our collective vision and key recommendations for the proposed South Shore Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) Ordinance. These recommendations were developed by long-time residents and community leaders to better address the unique needs of South Shore. We’re advocating for a CBA that protects current residents, supports small landlords, creates local jobs, and ensures sustainable development for all.
Summary of Key Recommendations
1. Expand the Ordinance to Include All of South Shore
The current ordinance proposal covers parts of Woodlawn, Greater Grand Crossing, and only a section of South Shore. We’re advocating for all of South Shore to be included to create a cohesive approach to tackling disinvestment and displacement.
2. Protect Small Landlords
While the ordinance rightly seeks to hold large landlords accountable, some of its requirements may unintentionally burden smaller, community-based property owners who provide affordable housing. We propose specific protections for these small landlords.
3. Ensure Affordability Across All Income Levels
Our goal is to keep South Shore accessible to residents at every income level. We recommend conducting a thorough study to understand housing affordability across different income groups and to guide future development.
4. Create Local Job Opportunities
We propose requiring developers to hire South Shore residents for projects with more than four units, creating jobs and reinvesting in our community.
5. Fund and Support Local Organizations
Instead of creating new offices, we advocate for increased funding for existing local nonprofits with proven records in tenant advocacy and support.
